Canadian Marriage Certificate Apostilled for Mexico

For family-unity residency or a notary procedure in Mexico, the Canadian marriage certificate is filed apostilled and translated. Since 2024 legalization at the Mexican consulate is no longer needed: the apostille from the province or Global Affairs Canada is enough.

Which Mexican offices ask for this document

These are the most common procedures; the receiving office may ask for more:

Residency visa, exchange for a resident card, and family-unity residency

Temporary or Permanent Residency in Mexico

Office: Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) and Mexican consulates abroad
  • When residency is based on a family tie, the foreign marriage or birth certificate must carry the apostille of the state or province that issued it.
  • As a rule, the INM does not ask for an FBI or RCMP check for residency; the consulate or INM office may request additional documents in specific cases.
  • Documents in English or French are usually filed with a Spanish translation.
⏱ Validity: Civil registry certificates do not expire, but some offices prefer recently issued certified copies. If you are asked for a criminal record check, it normally has to be recent.
Protocolización (notarial formalization) of foreign powers and documents

Notary Procedures in Mexico: Property, Estates and Companies

Office: Notario público (and, where applicable, the Public Property or Commerce Registry)
  • A power of attorney signed in the U.S. or Canada must be signed before a notary there and apostilled in that same state or province.
  • Once in Mexico it is translated by a perito, and the notario usually formalizes it (protocolización) before it is used.
  • Have the Mexican notario review the wording before you sign, so it includes the powers the transaction needs.
⏱ Validity: A power of attorney does not expire by itself, but some notarios and banks ask for recent corporate certificates or confirmation that the power is still in force.

Which version works and which does not

An apostille can only go on a public document with the right signature and seal:

✓ Accepted versions
  • Certified copy issued by the provincial vital statistics office (for example ServiceOntario or Quebec’s Directeur de l’état civil)
✕ Versions that get rejected
  • Ceremonial certificates from the officiant or church
  • Short versions without full details
Variants of this document: Provincial long-form marriage certificate (certified copy of marriage registration)
Step by step

How to prepare this document

Follow this order so the authority apostilles it and the Mexican office accepts it:

1

Order the certified copy from the province where the marriage was registered.

2

Apostille from that province, if it has its own authority, or from Global Affairs Canada.

3

Spanish translation by a perito traductor.

Apostille route

Which authority apostilles your document?

The apostille comes from a specific office, depending on where the document was issued or signed. Pick your case:

Competent authority
✓ Confirmed route

Ontario Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery (Official Document Services)

Apostilled by Ontario Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery (Official Document Services) (Province of Ontario).

Important: Certificates must be certified copies issued by ServiceOntario (Office of the Registrar General). Notarial and academic documents must be signed before an Ontario notary. Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Quebec also apostille their own documents; documents from the other provinces and territories go through Global Affairs Canada. Canada has issued apostilles since January 11, 2024. An apostilled Canadian document no longer needs legalization at a Mexican consulate.

Translation

Translation by a perito traductor

Mexican offices usually ask for documents in English or French to be translated into Spanish by a perito traductor authorized by the state judiciary. The translation normally includes the apostille. Each office decides which peritos it accepts: some only take peritos from their own state.

✓ Before translating, we confirm with you which perito the office where you will file accepts.

Frequently asked questions

Apostille questions: Marriage Certificate

I have a certificate legalized by the consulate before 2024. Is it still valid?

It depends on the receiving authority and how old a document it accepts. If you are asked for a recent copy, the new one is handled with an apostille, without going through the consulate.

Which provinces apostille their own certificates?

Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Quebec. Certificates from the other provinces and territories are apostilled by Global Affairs Canada.

My marriage certificate is from Quebec. Where is it apostilled?

Quebec apostilles its own documents, as do Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Certificates from the other provinces and territories are apostilled by Global Affairs Canada.
